NicholasTheGreat Plagiarism Punishment

Hello everyone,

On March 25th, HO was made aware that user @NicholasTheGreat had copied the bulk of another user's post in the "(S21) - PT2 - Hall of Fame" thread.

A recent case involving plagiarism of point tasks serves as our basis for this punishment, and can be found HERE. We’d like to remind everyone that copying a post and changing a few statements is still plagiarism.
The punishment will be:

--Loss of credit for PT2,
--A loss of 3 TPE from the player's current total TPE (the amount the user would have earned for the PT), and
--A fine of $2 million.

As usual, the user in question is welcome to contact @iamslm22 if they wish to appeal their punishment.

Now that it's not a CHI player, maybe people won't accuse me of being biased... still think $2M fine for a 3TPE PT is too much, which is the equivalent of 2 weekly trainings, 10 TPE, or just shy of an Ultimus task (4x 200 words). It would also take a 1189 word media to make the equivalent of the fine back, which is 5x the value of the infraction. Punishment seems too steep considering the most of the PTs like predictions and trivia are plagiarized anyways, it's just not possible to track, and my opinion is that the punishment should fit the crime, not only serve as a deterrent to future rule-breakers.

Completely unreasonable. Stats are public record. I don’t see how you could plagiarize something that is freely available. They used the same player and the same stats. That should be allowed. Or the point task should have stated that using stats won’t count towards your word count.

6,287 – Career kickoff return yards, 10th all-time. 5th at the time of his retirement
880 – Career catches, 3rd all-time. 2nd at retirement
716 – Career playoffs return yards, 5th all-time. 1st at retirement
118 – Career receiving touchdowns, the most in history. Only one of two players to top 100

That is just a snippet from the post but they are the same in both even the layout style is the same style.

The whole point of punishments is to set an example and make sure we don't have people trying to do this in the future. Newer members need to know that this stuff isn't acceptable and that there will be a steep price to pay for it.

That information is still freely available. He is just listing stats of a player. The definition of plagiarism is being stretched in this case. Regardless his punishment should not be the same as someone who blatantly plagiarized twice. This was mostly the product of a bad pt

I'm not against the loss of TPE, but the fine being equal seems a bit of a stretch. Someone else already made a great argument as to why the fine is so steep, but why is it the same as someone who plagiarized two entire PTs twice? IMO the fine should be reduced.

The whole point of punishments is to set an example and make sure we don't have people trying to do this in the future. Newer members need to know that this stuff isn't acceptable and that there will be a steep price to pay for it.

And I addressed this with the last statement of my original comment. The punishment should fit the crime, and this is overkill in my opinion, and punishments should not be doled out to serve merely as a deterrent (else all crimes would be punished with capital punishment). If a user copies another player's predictions or trivia without deleting the quotes, they get no credit but are not fined for plagiarizing, they just don't get the TPE. Hell, there even used to be language in the PTs stating this. I see no reason that a 200 word written PT should be treated differently from the hundreds of other PTs that are just blatantly copied from LRs or just from the threads themselves, what, just because you had to string some words together? Bullocks.

Seems fair to me. This is not really that different than trying to double claim TPE. You should lose the TPE, obviously, and there should be an extra punishment for cheating. Pretty straightforward.
