DISCLAIMER: I want to preface this article with the fact that I planned on writing it before the recent punishments and debates happened over “tampering” charges on Myrtle Beach. This isn’t some sort of PR piece, it was what I wanted to do as soon as we won the Ultimini and knew I’d be called up.
Coming into the NSFL I really only signed up because everyone of my friends in Major League Redditball were. I had no hopes of really doing any kind of earning, and quickly went IA prior to the DSFL draft of S20. Upon realizing on draft day that I had in fact been drafted, I was quickly invited to the locker room. I didn’t understand it at the time, but being added to that locker room and seeing how excited everyone was to have me show up really gave me hope for the league. I was a 14th round pick with 50 TPE, most likely only drafted due to MLR connections, but the team was just as excited to see me as they were a 1st round pick.
I quickly learned in my first few weeks that Myrtle Beach was going to have a good year. After a mid-season trade for star CB Hehateme Picksix, and GM Dax Frost being a top earner at the same position, I was put at safety. I know it’s a rule that actives must play over inactives, but the fact that the GM’s were willing to find a noob like me a spot on the best defense in NSFL history really got me into every sim.
Our historic Season 20 did not end the way we wanted it to, losing to the Minnesota Grey Ducks in the Ultimini, but I was still so happy to be on such a welcoming and fun team. The offseason is usually a quiet time in sim league/fake sports locker rooms, but Myrtle Beach was just as active as ever. Being in a locker room with friends is one of the best experiences a user can have, and when those friendships are built organically it builds a great team culture. This is what Myrtle Beach made.
Going into Season 21, we graduated almost all of our top tier defensive players following the draft. Even though not on the team, these players all stuck around to keep the culture going. Our S21 team was as active as S20, maybe even more so. It’s a great feeling to greet new draftees the same way I was greeted 2 months prior, and to see all the new faces form friendships just like we did.
Obviously our Season 21 campaign was insanely successful, winning the Ultimini that we all wanted so bad. The success was a great payoff after all of us putting in a lot of work just to fall short the season before It comes bittersweet, though, as I know this season will be my last in Myrtle Beach as a player. Luckily, I’m going to a great team in the NSFL in Colorado, and hope to start my Defensive Rookie of the Year campaign for season 22. So, in summation, thank you Myrtle Beach. You’ve crafted me and many other players over these last few seasons into what I think are great personalities and members of a great league.
