Yuge breaking news out of Sarasota this afternoon: Star receiver, Dexter Banks II, will go from catching touchdowns to throwing them this season. That’s right, Sarasota has found their Quarterback for Season 23. What people don’t realize is that Banks II has been the emergency Quarterback on the depth chart dating back to his days in Orange County, so Banks has sat in professional Quarterback rooms with the best of the best, AKA 3-time defending MVP Franklin Armstrong. Not a bad mentor to have, if you ask me.
As with most gifted athletes, Banks II grew up playing Quarterback in youth ball and some at the High School level as well, but when colleges came knocking on the door, they wanted him to play receiver. Banks II saw playing wide receiver as his ticket to the professional level and never looked back, that is until now. It was around mid-way through Season 22 when Banks II and just about everyone else that follows the NSFL, realized that there was not a long-term solution at the Quarterback position in Sarasota. What people did not know about is the behind the scenes conversations between Dexter Banks II and the Sarasota front office. The idea first emerged when Banks II was discussing a contract extension. Banks II was very happy in his new home with all of his Sarasota teammates, but with him reaching the apex of his career he didn’t want to be a part of a major rebuilding project without an heir apparent Quarterback, especially as a Wideout. After several workouts behind closed doors, the Sarasota front office was pleased with what they saw out of Banks II potential to play Quarterback at the pro-level and so they agreed that following Season 22 and the retirement of Rose Jenkins, they would allow Dexter to take over the reins of the offense.
When asked about the decision to change Banks II position to Quarterback, GM @RainDelay said, ”We are thrilled to hear that Dexter Banks will be switching to QB. It will be weird to see him not out there catching passes but throwing them instead, but we will get used to it. It really sums up what kind of individual Banks is, always putting the team first. It is that type of loyalty that we built Sarasota on and I cannot wait to see what's in store for the future!”
What should we expect out of Banks II next year productivity-wise? Well I would expect his legs to be a featured part of the offense that should keep defenses on their toes in an attempt to contain him and prevent explosive plays. The passing game has less certainty behind it as we could see some volatile performances but limiting turnovers will be perhaps the most important measuring stick of success. A good comparison could be what we saw from Jay Cue this past season, however, the numbers may not match up due to difference in total team talent around each of the players. Banks II should have more help that can help translate into better statistics and more team wins.
Assuming Dexter Banks II can give Sarasota competent Quarterback play, this move makes a ton of sense from a roster structure standpoint. You have a ton of young talent at the skill positions that should be able to more than makeup for whatever they will lose in production from Banks II no longer catching passes. His teammate and former running mate, Rayne Gordon, is excited about the swap saying, “I'm gonna miss my partner in crime running routes, I'll be honest, but it'll be crazy now that he’s the one throwing the ball to me! We always said he could've been a quarterback and joked that he missed his true calling, but now it's a reality. Pretty crazy how life works sometimes, right? Anyways, we gonna be the same duo that we usually are. Keep making it Rayne all the way to the Banks!"
If you have been following Dexter on twitter recently you could have perhaps pieced together that he had something up his sleeve.

This one could have been mistaken for S23 draft leaks, but I digress.

And of course, moments before the news became public, Dexter all but spelled it out for us in a surprisingly meta picture that will make your head spin if you ponder it for too long.

The Dexter Banks II era has arrived in Sarasota, so I suggest that all viewers buckle up for a wild and hopefully spectacular ride.
