Defensive ends across the league are well-respected because of the impact they can have on a team's defense. These guys can disrupt a quarterback's focus during a game with a grueling sack and can also stop the run with their speed to cut to the edge and stop that running back. These guys can be your bread and butter on defense and are definitely needed on every good defense unit. That being said, a team without an impact defensive end can completely shut down. Teams without these players on the edge will surely suffer the consequences as their defensive line will almost shut down without a defensive end. For a good defense you need a good defensive line. For a good defensive line your most crucial players are the defensive ends. Today, we look at the best and worst defensive ends in the league.
The Best Defensive Ends
1. Jayce Tuck
This 6'5, 310 pound powerhouse is a name that everyone knows in this league. Jayce Tuck. He is the best defensive end in the league without surprise. The Outlaws certainly got a steal when they picked him up in the inaugural draft at the 18th spot. Currently in 6 games played, he has a stat line of 25 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 2 forced fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, and a league leading 11 sacks. He even has 1 safety. The 11 sacks just speaks for itself. He disrupts passing games and causes headaches for the opposing teams. Clearly deserves this number one spot by a mile.
2. Kurt Hendrix
Now this second spot was extremely close between two players. But in the end, I chose Kurt Hendrix from USC. Now he was drafted originally as a linebacker but recently switched positions to defensive end, and is already dominating. He was drafted in the inaugural draft in the TENTH ROUND, 56th OVERALL. That is a huge steal to what he has become today in the NSFL. Hendrix currently has 22 tackles, 3 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, and tied for second in the league for sacks with 8. He is still behind Tuck but is producing results for this Hawks defense, who last year did not do as well on defense as they are doing this year. Kurt Hendrix is a star and the Hawks are lucky to have him.
3. Fuego Wozy
The reason why Fuego Wozy was not in the second spot is due to the fact that Kurt Hendrix has 2 more sacks then him. Other than that, they are identical except for the tackles for loss department. Wozy has 3 more tackles for loss than Kurt Hendrix. So why did I pick Hendrix ahead of my partner in crime on the defensive line in Colorado? I feel like sacks have more impact than tackles for loss to a certain extent. If I were to choose between two sacks or three tackles for loss, I would have to choose the two sacks because of the impact they have on a defense. Fuego Wozy was drafted 39th overall in the seventh round out of the university of Tennessee to the Colorado Yeti, in the inaugural draft. He has 22 tackles, 6 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, and is 6th in the league for sacks, with 6. Fuego is doing work for this struggling Yeti team and if his teammates can step out of their slump (especially his teammate Blaster Blade) this team can go the distance once again to the Ultimus.
The Worst Defensive Ends
*DISCLAIMER* THE PLAYERS ON THIS LIST CAN EASILY TURN THEIR SEASONS AROUND. I AM NOT TRYING TO TAKE SHOTS AT ANY OF THESE PLAYERS, I'M JUST BASING THIS ARTICLE OFF THE CURRENT WEEK 6 OF THE NSFL SECOND SEASON, PLEASE DON'T TAKE ANYTHING TO HEART AND SORRY IF I OFFENDED YOU IN ANY WAY*
1. Chidubem Okonkwo
There's a reason why I put this man out of Fresno State as the worst defensive end right now. I do not know what is going on in San Jose but this man needs to step it up. In 6 games, Okonkwo only has 6 tackles and 3 tackles for loss. He is not performing very well. The Sabercats can have a sigh of relief as they did not spend too much on this defensive end, losing their 43rd overall pick in the 6th round of the second season of the NSFL. He certainly needs to turn his season around if the Sabercats want some pressure on their already weak defensive line, having a league low of 14 sacks.
2. Blaster Blade
The Yeti have one of the best defensive ends in Fuego Wozy, but they also have one of the weakest and most disappointing defensive ends in Blaster Blade. The reason why he is higher on this list than some other names is because the expectation that the league and his team had for him when he was drafted 2nd overall in this year's draft. Blade has 13 tackles, only 1 tackle for loss and a low total of 3 sacks. This man was a top 5 defensive end last year in Arizona. This year, he's playing like the worst defensive end. He was drafted 2nd overall for a reason. He was expected to play well and he's doing the exact opposite. If he steps up and helps out his current partner, Fuego Wozy , on the defensive line, possibly this defense could do bigger and better things.
3. Bisquiteen Crocker
Even with one of the most unique names in the league, I have to put him on this list. There were some other names as well that could have easily taken this spot but I'm not sure of the second defensive end spot in Baltimore. It seems there are 2 players splitting the time for this second spot so I did not put them on this list. Bisquiteen Crocker was drafted in the inaugural draft, in the 14th round 80th overall. (Drafted 1 pick behind Harriff Ernston, the league's arguably best Linebacker) Crocker was drafted out of the Ivy League school, Harvard, one of the world's most famous schools for it's academics, not so much for sports. Crocker has 11 tackles, 5 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks. Not a pretty stat line. The Las Vegas Legion are a new expansion team. They have probably the weakest defensive end combination as Crocker's partner, Thaddeus Bullard was also in contention for this spot. They need some new defensive ends if they want to make an impact on defense.
Defensive End is arguably the most important position on a team's defense. Some of these players are leading their teams to victory, and some of these players are holding their team back. Hopefully these players can turn it around and create havoc for another team's offense.
* Again, please don't take this to heart. I have not wrote an article in a while and felt it was time to write one. The players on the "Worst" list can turn their season around. This article was not meant to offend anyone at all, and I apologize if I did.
