Who was the best defense in the playoffs you ask? Well that’s pretty obvious to me. In my other article, I detailed how to stop that defense, and well no team could do that, so of course, it is the Outlaws defense that was the best playoff defense. They played like they have all season, dominating on defense and not allowing anything to fly as they won their second straight Ultimus trophy. They have shown time and time again that they will stop whoever they face, and once again no one could stop their path to the championship.
First we’ll look at the Otters foray into the den of the beast. The defense allowed the Otters 6 first downs, a remarkably small amount considering the Otters offense was one of the best in the league all year. They allowed 212 passing yards, which isn’t a lot but also isn’t as remarkable as the first down number. It’s a respectable number considering the Otter’s offense was fantastic in the air. They allowed only 37 yards on the ground, which is great, but the Otter’s offense wasn’t very good at running the ball throughout the season. They also amassed 7 sacks, 5 PDs, 1 forced fumble and fumble recovery, and overall, they dominated the offensive line of the Otters. Overall, they imposed their will on the Otters, who really only had 1 drive that was notable, with their other 2 drives ending in field goals. The Otters did match up well with them however, as they were able to stop the offense from having notable drives as well, but this is about the Outlaws defense, not the Otters.
The Ultimus game was not as close, as the Hawks did not play well in their matchup with the Outlaws. With only 111 yards in the air, Kyubee was kept in check all game. Add in 2 interceptions by the Hawks starter and it was not a good game for him at all, posting a 27.8 passer rating, Farlane had a bit better of a game, running for 104 yards, doing what he has done all season. He’s been a reliable back for the Hawks, and was able to do it again, and was the only bright spot of this team in the final game of the season. The Outlaws also had 5 PDs, 6 sacks, and 2 safeties. The surprising number is the Hawks had more first downs than the Otters did, and considering the Hawks really had no outstanding drives, it seems they couldn’t sustain drives when they started to get something going. They did not treat the Hawks well, and left the team beaten, battered, and scarred on the way to their second straight championship. The Outlaws destroyed Hawks offense and never gave them a shot at victory, starting fast and never letting up.
So, the Outlaws dominant defense once again proved why they are the best defense in the league. Every other team in the league was forced to watch the Outlaws dominate teams that took pride in their offense, and teams were forced to watch a beating in the Ultimus game. The Outlaws are the premier team in the league, proving a dominant defense will outplay a great offense just about every time. They have enough of an offense to get the job done, but their bread and butter is in dominating the trenches, and hitting your QB time and time again. They do a great job of stopping the run, getting pressure and making you pay when a mistake is made, and they did that again in the playoffs this year. If I were to bet today who the best defense is next year, I’m going with the Outlaws easily, and they’ve shown why time and time again.
