Defensive Line Standouts - Week 1
Welcome to week 1 of our Season 3 Defensive Line Standouts! It’s been a long off-season with some big rookie additions and some big names on the move. Blaster Blade is now is sandy Las Vegas and JD Boom, who was replaced by sure fire stand-out rookie, Ricardo Sandoval, is now in sunny Orange County. The biggest name to make the move this year however, is Mark Ramrio. Ramrio made 12 appearances on our list last season, the most of any player in the NSFL. He now resides in the city of brotherly love, Philadelphia. Will all the love make him soft, and can he succeed without his former brother in crime, Vinny Cox? Only Time will tell.
As a friendly reminder, here is how each team finished last year:
Las Vegas: 30
Arizona: 26
Baltimore: 26
Colorado: 20
San Jose: 18
Orange County: 17
Yellowknife: 14
Philadelphia: 13
Will the Las Vegas Legion repeat as the Defensive Line Standout Champions? Can the Philadelphia Liberty dig themselves out of the basement? Will anyone from the Yellowknife Wraiths not named Bjornsson make an impact here? (Looking at you, Maddox!) This and many more questions answered below!
As always, all comments, suggestions, or corrections are welcome and appreciated. Enough chit chat… Let’s begin!
Defensive End Top Performers
J. Tuck
($) 9 TCK, 2 TFL, 3 SCK
After finishing Season 2 as defensive player of the year, Jayce Tuck started Season 3 exactly where he left off. His 9 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks were tops for any defensive lineman on our list and good enough to, in my opinion, warn him defensive player of the week honors. If he were able to continue with this super-human pace, he would finish the season with 126 tackles, 28 tackles for loss, and 42 sacks. Tuck travels to Philadelphia next week to face off against a Liberty offensive line that allowed 65 sacks last year, most in the NSFL.
B. Blade
($) 9 TCK, 1 TFL, 3 SCK
While Blade had a solid year last year, this is the type of performance the Colorado Yeti were expecting from him when they took him with the second overall pick in the Season 2 draft. I don’t know if it was change in defensive scheme, or just a simple change in scenery but, something clearly clicked for him. His 9 tackles, 1 tackle for loss and 3 sacks are good enough to rank him second on our list this week, both among defensive ends and defensive linemen as a whole. Blade will face his first test of the season as he faces of against a Baltimore team that was tied for the third least sacks allowed in the NSFL last year.
F. Wozy
($) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
A very familiar name on our list last year, Wozy tied Kurt Hendrix of the Baltimore Hawks with the second most appearances by a defensive end (9). While his stat line is as shocking as the two listed above him, his 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack are good enough to earn him a spot on our list every week. One of the few bright spots remaining on the Colorado Yetis roster, Wozy will take his considerable talents to Orange County next week to face an offensive line that allowed only 1 sack against the Philadelphia Liberty.
Other Great Performers
C. Okonkwo
($) 6 TCK, 1 SCK
D. Dam
($) 3 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
E. Gustavsson
($) 3 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
Okonkwo made a few appearances on our list last year and appeared to be on the verge of a breakout. It looks like he may have finally broken through. Dam is the other half of the terrifying Arizona pass rushing duo, and I expect his stats would be much higher every week if Tuck wasn’t on the other side. Gustavsson is our first rookie making an appearance on our list this week and looks to finally give Bjornsson some pass rushing help.
Defensive Tackle Top Performers
D. Miller
($) 9 TCK, 1 TFL, 2 SCK, 1 forced fumble
Compared to Season 1, Miller had a bit of a quiet Season 2. He looked to rectify that this season and came through in a big way. He led all defensive tackles in both tackles and sacks, while also adding a tackle for loss and forced fumble for good measure. His performance this week earned him the top defensive tackle spot on our list this week, and second place overall. He travels to Yellowknife next week to face off against an offensive line that allowed only 18 sacks all of last season but, 3 against the Hawks this week.
B. Metas
($) 4 TCK, 1 TFL, 1 SCK
After a massively successful 20 sack season in Season 1, Metas had a bit of a down season (by no one’s standards but his own) yet he still managed a spot on the Season 2 NSFC Pro Bowl team. Metas was one of usual suspects on this list last season, and with the apparent disappearance of Ramrio and Cox, I expect to see much more of him. His stat line of 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 sack is a good performance, especially with how great the Baltimore front 7 is. Baltimore heads out next week to face the Legion, in Las Vegas.
B. Bjornsson
($) 5 TCK, 1 SCK
Yet another regular on the list last year, Bjornsson was the only player to make our list at least twice in both the defensive tackle and defensive end positions. While he never had a massive, stand-out performance, he also put forth a good effort, and this week was more of the same. His 5 tackle and 1 sack performance won’t exactly set the world on fire but, it’s a stat-line that any defensive lineman would be happy to have. He has a chance for a big week as the Wraiths head out to San Jose to face an offensive line that just allowed 8 sacks and recorded only 16 pancakes (both worst in the NSFL.)
Other Great Performers
R. Sandoval
($) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
A. Saginaw
($) 3 TCK, 1 SCK
E. Kamaka
($) 4 TCK, 1 TFL
All three of the above performances are rookies in their first NSFL experience. What a way to come into the league. Sandoval was a highly prized pick for the Hawks so, it isn’t too surprising to see his name here. Saginaw and Kamaka are a bit of an unknown commodity, however, and it’s great to see some newnames making a big splash.
Team Appearances After Week 1
Arizona: 2
Baltimore: 2
Las Vegas: 2
Philadelphia: 2
Yellowknife: 2
Colorado: 1
San Jose: 1
Orange County: 0
After week 1 we sit at a 5-way tie for first. Th only team to not make an appearance on our list this week would be the Orange County Otters. While they’re known for having a fantastic offensive line, their lack of a showing this week, and coming in sixth on our list overall last year, show that the defensive side really needs some work. We had an impressive four rookies on our list this week, but it is interesting to note that first overall pick, Godfrey King, was not one of them. It’s also interesting to note that 3 of our 4 top performers last year, Mark Ramrio, Vinny Cox, and Kurt Hendrix, were all absent from our list this week.
