So earlier today I wrote up an article on all of the offensive prospects in the DSFL draft. Due to time constraints, I couldn't get to the defensive players. So to remedy this, I've decided to go through the first four rounds and give my candid opinion on each pick.
*As an added note, if you were drafted after the fourth round and want me to give my opinion on your specific pick, leave a comment and I will give my analysis.
Round 1:
Pick 1:
Wolverine Justice - I called this one in my earlier write up. An extremely active member with proven success and the only active QB in the draft. I honestly believe Norfolk hit a home run with this pick and are going to see quick returns with him. Although I will admit, it's going to be fun sacking him all year.
Pick 2:
John Wachter - Another person that, in my earlier write-up, I said would go extremely high and probably the first WR taken. He was both of these. He has been hyper active early on and appears, at least to me, to have the type of personality that is going to stick around a while. I thought there were many other players that could have been picked here that would have been equally as good of a pick, but Mr. Wachter is certainly not a bad pick.
Pick 3:
Egor Medved - At first look many people were questioning why the Luchadores wouldn't have taken Andre Bly Jr. if they were looking at a defensive player. It was later learned that Bly was not interested in playing for the Luchadores so they respected that and went with Medved. But don't let that fool you, Medved is very capable. He was picked up on waivers by the Marshals and was a key piece on the defense on their championship run. He will be productive this year for the Luchadores and I expect him to have a fantastic season.
Pick 4:
Andre Bly Jr. - The person that many people thought was going to go number 1 comes in at number 4. I honestly don't have much to say about this pick. Obviously great value at pick number four. He was also picked up on waivers last year. He played great for the Coyotes and is undoubtedly going to continue to play well for them. Great value, great pick, great player. It's as easy as that.
Pick 5:
Bastion Barnhardt - Alright, I'm going to do my best to remain unbiased here. Best pick in the draft hands down.... In all seriousness I loved this pick. I believe that I'll fit in with the Marshals perfectly. They lost a good amount on defense and specifically the defensive line which means I'm going to make an impact right off the bat. I'm excited to be apart of this organization and bring home another championship this year. This was a pick based on fit and I think it will work out great.
Pick 6:
Fresh Booter - I really like Fresh Booter as a player and a person. He wants to break the mold that tight ends can't produce in the sim. He is an experienced and active player and I expect him to be very successful in the DSFL. A quick tight end lining up against linebackers will be tough to cover if utilized correctly. We shall see. I think all of Fresh Booter's value is going to come down to whether or not he is used correctly in the offense. He will either be a bit of a bust or a massive home run as a pick and the sad part is that the main determinant of which of these he becomes is the skill of his GM, and not himself. At least that's how I see it.
Round 2:
Pick 7:
Ryan Sierra - The offensive line remains unchanged in the DSFL. Because no offensive lineman were over 100 TPE there won't be offensive lineman bots in the DSFL. Sierra is going to be the one to change this. He is active and, when given the choice to take a free position change, he stuck with offensive line. All of these are great signs for the Luchadores pick. My only gripe I have is that there was some great talent still on the table that may have been a better pick in this spot. I really do believe that Sierra will be a great offensive lineman in the DSFL, but they probably could have gotten him in the third round.
Pick 8:
Carlito Crush - A fantastic pick. Nobody will dispute this. A 110 TPE tight end is a great second round pick in the DSFL. I don't care how poorly tight ends may or may not be in the sim, Crush was a steal in the second round. Not much else to say really. I like this pick from just about every angle. Well done Pythons.
Pick 9:
Luke Kraken - The first line backer chosen out of a strong line backer class, Kraken has a lot to live up to. Using his balanced build he has began working on his speed and tackling. Norfolk desperately needed to fix the holes in their defense and this was the first step after taking Justice in the first round. Look for Kraken to be able to cover tight ends and wide receivers with his speed and the real question will come down to how he fares against the run.
Pick 10:
Kenny Omega - Norfolk acquired this pick through a trade from the Coyotes. Omega will bring more explosiveness to an already explosive offense. He appears very active and ready to make a difference right away catching passes from fellow rookie Justice. But I don't love this pick. Don't get me wrong, I like Omega. I like Omega a lot. But Norfolk had serious troubles with their defense last year and despite them choosing an LB the pick before this, I believe they should've continued building up their defense. But perhaps I'm wrong, maybe more offense will work out for them. But their team is looking to be similar to last year. Great offense, suspect at best defense.
Pick 11:
Tegan Atwell - The surprise pick of the draft right here... Obviously not. Jiggly picked their own recreate player because they had to. With that being said, Atwell will be a guaranteed active player in an important defensive position. I expect Atwell to have a productive year and this second round pick will not be wasted.
Pick 12:
Luiz Elmarez - Again, trying to keep my bias out of it, I really like this pick for one reason. It cemented the fact that the Marshals are drafting based on what players fit with their system and the holes in that system. After drafting a pass rushing DE in the first round, San Antonio shores up one of its holes at LB by taking Elmarez who is built around stopping the run. Elmarez has fantastic tackling and strength stats that really stand out compared to many others in this draft. His speed is weak currently but as far as run stopping defenders, Elmarez was at the top of the list in this draft which is why I think this pick is going to be underrated by many.
Round 3:
Pick 13:
Terrell Brister - This is one of my favorite picks in the entire draft. In a draft where the wide receivers and tight ends look to be dominant, the Luchadores pick up an active man to man corner back in the third round. With electric speed, high agility, and great hands, Brister is built to make interceptions. I just really like a man to man corner in a draft class like this. There are going to be a lot of great wide out and tight ends that emerge this year and Brister is primed to be the Luchadores main way of stopping them.
Pick 14:
Gregory Fletcher - The Marshals following suit behind the Luchadores and pick themselves up a man to man corner. This is another pick for the Marshals where I don't think they necessarily picked up the best man available, but they filled a hole on their defense that desperately needed to be filled. Fletcher, similar to Brister, has great speed and solid hands. But Fletcher has decided to up his intelligence as well. Which is about the only thing the two corners differ in. It will be interesting to see how both Fletcher and Brister turn out and how their builds differ. But for now, I think both were great picks in their respective spots.
Pick 15:
Jett Winters - Listen, it's nothing against Jett Winters, but this is one of my least favorite picks in the first four rounds. I believe that Winters is going to be fantastic this year. I really think he is going to shut down many of the defensive lineman he faces and should do a great job protecting Justice. But Norfolk really should've addressed that defense some more. The first four rounds are all about getting good, active players that your team needs. Again, I think Winters very well may have been the best available player and was hands down the best remaining OL. I just think Norfolk should've picked differently.
Pick 16:
Conall O'Sullivan - Again, O'Sullivan is solid. More than solid even. In the third round this was a steal. Active and a receiving running back that fits the system? Perfect, right? There is no doubt that Conall adds great value to this Norfolk offense, but they again missed an opportunity to draft another defensive player in this deep defensive draft. Hopefully Norfolk can score some points because they are going to need to.
Pick 17:
Darren Morris - As if I need to reiterate it again, the Marshals like to draft defensive players that fit the system. It's a good thing Morris will fit just about any system. He is one of the fastest defensive players in the draft with a high intelligence and endurance. Look for him to make plays at the end of games when everybody else is running out of gas. This is the fourth defensive player drafted by the Marshals in three rounds and really shows what they were looking to do. A man to man lockdown corner, pass rushing DE, run stopping LB, and now an all around monster safety in Morris. The Marshals are betting it all on their defense in this draft. Great value here in this pick.
Pick 18:
Peg Leg - The first kicker and/or punter taken off the board happens on the final pick of the third round. Definitely an interesting pick here. Mr. Leg is a power kicker and if the Blues were looking for a solid special teams player, then they've got their man right here. I feel that there was a ton of great offensive and defensive value still left on the board but if the Blues felt good about where their offense and defense was at then this pick was perfectly fine. I'm not in love with the pick, but I'm a long way from hating it.
Round 4:
Pick 19:
Sydney Spinelli - What. A. Pick. I had him pegged as the top running back prospect going into the draft. And then O'Sullivan was created and ended up getting drafted over Spinelli based on fit and history in the league. Spinelli appears active and hungry to prove the doubters wrong and I believe he'll do just that. He will be at the forefront of the Luchadores attack this year. He is insanely fast, fairly agile, and has a very respectable amount of endurance. I expect the Luchadores to give the ball early and often throughout the games and have a better season, at least statistically wise, than O'Sullivan.
Pick 20:
Ben Urlacher - Urlacher is the fifth and final defensive pick for the Marshals in the draft. Urlacher is very fast for a linebacker and has a fantastic tackling ability. Urlacher will be making plays all over the field from covering tight ends and wide receivers to stuffing the run. Urlacher is the definition of an all around line backer and it will be interesting to see how the Marshals utilize not only Urlacher, but all of their new defensive draft picks.
Pick 21:
Brandon Carter - The first non defensive draft pick for the Marshals comes with Carter. Carter is a possession tight end with outstanding hands. Carter's blocking, both pass and rush, are a little lacking currently which makes him an interesting prospect. I'd expect him to be utilized in the passing game almost exclusively and I can see him being successful in it. Carter will limit his number of drops this year and be very efficient when his name is called upon.
Pick 22:
Jacob Lattimore - Lattimore, in my eyes, has a long way to go until he is a force in this league. With outstanding speed and nearly unrivaled agility, you would think Lattimore would be a very competent safety. But with below average hands, tackling, and intelligence, it's hard for me to assume greatness from him. I believe Lattimore can develop into an above average safety but that will take a season or two. The one thing that I do like about this pick is that the Coyotes got one of the last remaining active defensive players so this pick is by no means a total loss.
Pick 23:
Cameron Taylor - This is a very solid pick as far as fourth rounders go. The last two picks have now both been safeties and after checking out the current builds, I like Taylor's more. He isn't as fast as Lattimore but makes up for it with great endurance. I really like Taylor so far. I think he can be an instant starter in the DSFL and should he stay active make a very solid safety. I'm not ready to say he will be defensive player of the year or even the defensive back of the year, but he will be a steady, consistent contributor to the Pythons.
Pick 24:
Dustin Atkins - This was a great pick by the Blues. He joined at the last possible second and managed to get into the draft. Nobody had a chance to scout him so he slipped all of the way to the last pick of the fourth round. Atkins, who appears ready to be active, is going to be one hell of a steal. Great speed, great agility, and solid hands are all the things a young route runner needs to be successful. His endurance is a bit low for a wide receiver and I'd like to see that raised in order to be a late game threat. But other than that I expect Atkins to catch a lot of passes this year and be a threat to all teams all year long.
And that about does it folks! So many great players picked in the first four rounds and after for that matter. Again, if you were chosen after the fourth round and want me to analyze your specific pick, let me know in the comments and I will get on that the first chance I get.
Good luck to all that were drafted. It should be a great season and I look forward to winning the championship easily.
