Welcome back! I am recent DSFL draftee Terrell Brister! Last time I went over my Junior year of High School, and glossed over my senior season because I was lazy! Now it’s time to get into college.
So, I was a 5 star recruit and I got quite a few scholarship offers. I met with a few recruiters too, so let's get into that. The first recruiter I met with was from Rutgers.
“We would really like to have you in our football program. We believe you are the next in line of great defensive backs to come out of Rutgers. You will be in the company of names like Devin and Jason Mccourty, Logan Ryan and Duron Harmon, all of which are starting at a pro level”
I also met with a recruiter from Boston College.
“Us at Boston College like to have hometown kids in our football program. We have produced plenty of high quality players in the pro’s and would like you to be the next. Also we are close to home, so you could have family at your home games.”
The final notable recruiter I met with was from the University of Connecticut
“UCONN has produced plenty of high quality DB’s. Byron Jones, Tyvon Branch and our newest addition to this list Obi Melifonwu. You can be the best, no you WILL be the best to ever come out of our school!”
Now you all know (if you read the first part) that I choice Boston College and became an Eagle. But the choice was a little hard. I would have been in good company had I gone to any of those schools. I thought long and hard, and made my announcement in front of my family, friends, coaches and relatives.
“I have thought long and hard about what College I want to go to. I could go to Alabama, or Clemson or even UConn. I have decided to go with what’s close. Boston College!”
Everyone clapped, my dad looked very proud of me, my mom cried and I got a ton of hugs. Full scholarship, all I have to do is play football. That’s all I wanted to do anyways. Just play football.
My very first practice was a disaster. I got burned multiple times in our Offense vs Defense scrimmage. I did get an interception off an arrant throw from the Backup QB though. I ran plenty of laps that day. My second practice was better, but still underwhelming as I didn’t get burned but I allowed a few contested catches where the receiver just straight up outplayed me. I didn’t lose every time though, as I swatted quite a few balls out of the receivers hands. Three of us freshman stayed after practice to work with coaches. A QB, a Wide receiver and me. All three of us were underperforming. We stayed about 3 hours just practicing. I managed to show why I earned that scholarship, locking down the receiver, and intercepting a ball or two.
The next morning we had a film session. We watched film from our opponent Villanova. I learned I would be starting the game on the bench. I could see why, I was really underperforming. I seemed to have lost it. I wasn’t performing to expectations in practice. So I worked hard. I was the first to get there and the last to leave by far. I was in the weight room whenever I wasn’t doing schoolwork or practice. In the end of my freshman year we finished 7 and 5 and lost in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl to Arizona.
My sophomore year is when the work paid off. The two starting corners left to enter the pro’s and I was thrust into the starting role. My very first game I was up against a receiver I was made to cover, 6’2 and decently fast. He had 50 yards on the game, but he had little YAC. We won 30-7. Another notable game in my sophomore year was against Clemson. I went up against Mike Williams. I had gradually improved over the course of the season. I held Mike Williams to 20 yards. We had a few contested deep balls and I came out on top of every single one. I had one pick that game too.
I really, really was impressed with myself after that game. I knew that teams in the big leagues had to take notice. My sophomore season stats were 4 Picks and 10 passes defended. I was beginning to solidify my role as a starter. I was still putting in work heading into my junior year. I was awake and in the gym every day at 5am, I was with coaches 6 days a week, I ran all around campus every day before I went to sleep. For the first few weeks of the offseason I was really sore. Then it just went away. I realized that this was my routine, and my body just stopped hurting. I went from 180 pounds to 190 real quick just in muscle. Midway through the summer I hired a nutritionist who helped me with a diet to keep getting stronger and bigger.
Midway through my Junior year, I was really being the shutdown corner I hoped to be. I was looking like one of the best corner in the NCAA and lots of receivers feared me. I had the look of a taller Darrelle Revis. Quarterbacks stopped throwing to my side. I was still picking of a ball a game. I finished my junior year with 9 picks and national attention. People were saying I could leave college and be a great NSFL player if I declared for the draft. I really thought about leaving school and declaring for the draft, but in the end I decided to return my senior year. I wanted to get my degree so I don’t go bankrupt after my playing career, and I really wanted to be the best player I could be when I do go into the draft.
In my senior year I had a lot of fun my second game against Vanderbilt. They were starting a freshman QB who pissed his pants every time he threw a pass. The Defense feasted on him and he committed 7 turnovers. 5 Picks and 2 fumbles. I finished with 3 picks and a TD. At this point I was being talked about by a ton of people. “Best corner this, best corner that” Blah blah blah blah blah! I just cared about winning. That is what we didn’t do. Our offense was still inexperienced and well to be honest they sucked. The defense made up for it as we finished at .500. I finished with 12 picks and a bunch of scarred QB’s
I was ready. I was ready to enter the draft. I worked hard all offseason, and now I’m ready this season.
