Power rankings seem to be all the rage now. All the kids are making them. Even Noble-gate has been powerfully ranked. But you know what, Liberty players need money too. So here is Part One of what will end up being a series that has as many parts as Liberty has active players so that everyone can get a piece of this pie.
1. Mike Boss - QB -
What can be said about Mike Boss that hasn’t already been said? The Otters play an extremely pass heavy offense and wouldn’t be able to execute it successfully without this guy. Mike Boss threw for 4649 yards last season, nearly 1,000 more than any other QB. Despite the volume of passes he threw, his TD numbers were not out of this world, just a measly league leading 30.
2. Chris Orosz - QB -
Chris Orosz played last season with the Yellowknife Wraiths before ripping out their hearts and leaving for greener pastures (and uniforms) in San Jose. The way he got there is extremely strange, re-signed with Yellowknife then asked to be traded to San Jose. I mean why not just sign with San Jose? And by forcing a trade, he actually weakened the team he is going to and strengthening an opponent. Strange. But that’s neither here nor there! Orosz is a good QB, but not a great QB. He threw for 28 TDs and 11 INTs last season which gave him a league leading +17 TD/INT ratio.
3. King Bronko - QB -
The man, the myth, the legend, King Bronko. This guy is a former WR, but he is out there making a name for himself as a passer these days. He has quarterbacked back-to-back Ultimus Championship teams. Despite this, he is often compared to Trent Dilfer of the 2000 Baltimore Ravens. Like Dilfer, Bronko won’t lose you many games, but he also won’t win you any either. The Outlaws, like the 2000 Ravens, live and die by the strength of their defense. Despite his lackluster play, I feel like the 3rd ranking is justifiable because of his team’s success.
4. Clifford Rove - QB
Clifford Rove is coming off a strong rookie season in which he was tasked with leading an upcoming and coming team. Rove exceeded expectations as he led the Philadelphia Liberty to their first playoff game, despite just being one season removed from expansion. Clifford Rove has continued to develop this offseason and expectations are high for the young quarterback and the Philadelphia Liberty moving into season four.
5(t). Matt Akselsen - QB
Matt Akselsen (not sure if I have the spelling right here…) is going to be playing quarterback for the first time this season after playing offensive line the past three. He will be leading a Wraiths team that saw several key players leave. The Yellowknife team still has a strong core of players, and could see themselves competing for a playoff spot if Akselsen can dominate at QB the same way he dominated at offensive line.
5(t). Avon Blocksdale - QB -
Avon Blocksdale is another former offensive lineman, weird to see two OL convert to QB in one season. He has never taken a snap at QB, so another wait and see here. Like Akselsen, I could see Blocksdale quickly moving up these rankings. However, he needs to prove it on the field first. He is taking over the QB position on a team that has made it to (and lost) back-to-back Ultimus games, so expectations for him will be high.
7. Wallace Stone - QB -
Wouldn’t ya know it? Another offensive lineman converts to QB. The Legion seem to have made all the right moves this offseason, bringing in a couple legitimate stars in free agency and finally making the switch at QB. It is almost impossible for Stone to be as ineffective as former Legion QB Josh Bercovici. Stone could surprise some this season, but I think the Legion are still a season or two away from competing with the Sabercats and Otters for the final playoff spot in the ASFC. It would take a truly outstanding season from Stone to get them in that conversation this year.
8. Nicholas Pierno - QB -
Almost didn’t even rank this guy. Rough season last year for a player on a team that is quickly becoming the laughing stock of the league. Pierno is a record setting QB though, he threw 35 INTs last season, which is more than any other NSFL QB has thrown in a single season. He is doing his best Mitchell Trubisky impression out there, finishing with a 48.7% completion percentage. If you can’t complete half your passes, you probably shouldn’t even be throwing it.
9. Logan Noble - QB - BANNED
Can’t have power rankings without mentioning Logan Noble these days. He is the Carmel Gibson of quarterbacks. Can’t help but think if he were just a little better at covering his tracks, he could have been 1000 TPE by the end of the season. By the next league expansion, he would have had 15 multis already up and at decent TPE levels. He would have led the Saskatoon Shymrs to glory with a team built with only Noble and Noble multis. Shame we won’t get to see it now...
10. Josh Bercovici - QB - FREE AGENT?
Did a DSFL team even pick this guy up? Last season he had more concussions than TDs, I doubt he’ll be able to even walk or talk by the time he turns 30. Probably best if he never plays another down of football. If only the Otters had chosen him as their starting QB in the great Otters QB controversy of S1, maybe he and Boss would be flipped on this list. Who knows?
Well that’s it folks. QB Power Rankings! Boom! Welcome to the show. Like I said, this series is just beginning! Maybe we’ll see other positional power rankings. Maybe we won’t. Maybe I’ll just keep doing QB Power Rankings after every game, maybe not. This is fluid. I’m just trying to make sure I hit 1,000 words on each article.
