In Week 10 of Season 4 in the NSFL, the Colorado Yeti got their first win of the season against the perennial NSFC favorite Baltimore Hawks. The final score was 20-12, as the game was dominated by the Yeti defense. The unit even scored one of the Yeti’s two touchdowns, helping to secure the near-historic upset. Haruki Ishigawa would like to issue a statement on the game.
I believe the cool kids these days say, “Haters gonna hate.” That’s been our take on things all season. We knew it was going to be an uphill battle to get wins this year, and we knew we were, at best, a very long shot to see any whiff of the playoffs. Still, we wanted to come out and show some competition. We’ve been doing that in some games, not so much in others. While no one will call this season a success, there are some things we’re learning about our team this season that will hopefully help us next year. Most of our lessons will be taken from the many losses we’ve accrued so far this season (as a loss always teaches more than a victory), but there are some things to take on board from this game, too.
First off, it feels damn good to win. I think most of us have had a taste of victory in college or even before that, but it’s on a different level here in the pros. To know that you’ve come out on top against literally the best talent in the world, that gives a special kind of rewarding feeling. It’s a shame that it’s taken us this long to get there. We deserve better than that with as much effort as we all put in week in and week out. Still, someone has to be at the bottom, and right now, it’s us.
Second, we can build on our defense. With Nicky P (@ralz9) and SebJo (@`The_King`) still learning the ropes up here in the big leagues, we’re not quite ready to be winning any shootouts with the Otters just yet. And Tweedsies (@PigSnout), as much of a stud as that guy is, can’t be the entire offense by himself whenever our passing game struggles. So we have to find another way to win some games. Let’s make no mistake about it: Our defense was a huge part of our win today. Obviously, our unit’s return for a TD today helped us on the scoreboard. My boy WhoDat Saint (@jparks98) had a huge game with 9 tackles and 2 sacks. En Fuego (@TheWoZy) spent all day in the backfield, as did Sandybritches (@TheMemeMaestro). Boggy B (@Daybe), Haymaker (@Rich), and The Vash (@Zeegee) were playing that lockdown coverage that we all know they’re capable of. I like to think I helped out some, too. (9 tackles and a sack is a pretty decent day.) Ultimately, the Hawks’ offense racked up a ton of yards but only made it into the end zone once. What I’m trying to say is, with some time, our defense is gonna be stacked, and we can start to carry some games and get some wins.
The last thing to take away from this win is that trench football is winning football. We need to keep Nicky P and Bossman clean until they can find their openings. While the Hawks allowed our guys to get 8 sacks on the day, we allowed one. Just one sack all day. That’s how we need to do it. In addition, our line was responsible for zero penalties. Sixty minutes, one sack, zero penalties. Equals one win. If we can play football like that, winning in the trenches on both sides of the ball, we’ll start to see a lot more wins than one in ten games. I’m calling it right now: in the next couple of years, you’re going to see the Yeti play some competitive football, and the naysayers are going to be surprised. Wait for it. The Yeti are coming.
