Well the preseason is finally over and it felt like trainin’ camp was just yesterday, but we’re finally here! The big time and the first regular season game is at ‘home’ against Norfolk. I put home in quotes because I’m still getting’ adjusted to things here in Portland and it’s a farcry from Texas I can tell ya that. Good thing we had all preseason games in Portland so I didn’t have to worry about travel or any of that stuff and focused on the new plays.
Our first preseason game was against the Palm Beach Solar Bears in an Ultimini rematch from last season. Coach Boa said we’ll take it slow and steady to see if I had that easy touch they were looking for and had me in for a few snaps. I got to play about 10 snaps and went 4/7 on attempts so it wasn’t that bad. I’m still tryin’ to learn the new playbook and it’s still confusing since snake references for everything I can make heads or tails between Red-Gardener-Hiss-Yellow play being a run for Gore or 22-Speed-Slither-Bite for a pass play and I kept messing up the cues. It was a good thing we had Borro Gore back because that boy along with Shawn Ariel, John Goose, and David Turner are really puttin’ in work for the committee we’ve got goin’. I swear those boys are faster than double-struck lightning! They stole that game away from the bots and I think we got a good chance at beatin’ them again if we both make it to the Ultimini.
Our second game against the Marshals was a stinker for me personally. I had a lot of dropped passes to our Emerald Wednesday on those short routes up the middle and got angry at myself for missin’ him. Marshals brought the pressure and I got sacked 3 times if I recall correctly. I think one of those times knocked a screw or two loose in my head. I did manage to get my first DSFL touchdown to Wednesday for 18 yards in the fourth quarter. If I felt any better, I’d drop my harp plumb through the cloud! Our third game in the preseason was against the Luchadores. I turned down a chance to play for this team too on account of my political views about the country they’re from and I do believe they were fixin’ to pay me back for some of the things I said. Well we won this one easily in the end and I got myself another touchdown this game to Emerald Wednesday again, but this time in the first quarter. I had a lot of dropped passes this game again, but I hit our new receiver Mark Grau (@keanex) a few times so we found a good rhythm once we got goin’. Grau and I didn’t speak much except during our first practice together. He’s a quiet man and I respect that. I think he just wants to work hard and show the league what he’s got to offer and I think the two of us can do that together. After layin’ a beatin’ to the Luchadores and sending them back to Mexico, we had our last preseason game against the Kansas City Coyotes.
This was the toughest game I’d ever been in and I can tell ya I’ve been playing football since I could walk. Coach Boa wanted me to take most of the snaps this game because of my spe-tac-u-lar performance against Tijuana, but I really wish Christ was leading this one because those Coyotes are some tough SOBs. I heard the Coyotes were good at rolling over and playing dead, but not this season! I was hittin’ Grau and Wednesday left and right until their linebacker LeFevre intercepted my pass in the second quarter. That really threw me off my game and it happened again in the fourth quarter when things were gettin’ down to the wire. That last one was bad because it led to a Coyotes touchdown and all I could do was hang my head in shame after that interception. Christ took over the next drive and we managed to hold them off with good defense and some runnin’ and gunnin’ by Gore and Ariel. I learned a lot that game. Number 1 was don’t ever underestimate a team because of their terrible past records and number 2 was to get out of my head about those interceptions.
Pythons are now 4-0 in the preseason and I think we can make that 4-0 in the regular season too! These games were sweeter than stolen honey and I’m excited to see what I can do with Grau as a solid target! Now back to training to get my head around the new play we got cookin'!
