I’m a big fan of horror movies. That’s not to say I like all, or even most, horror movies. I like GOOD horror movies. And there aren’t very many of those, sadly. Too often, the genre just churns out schlock: “homages” that are just the same old things, rehashed. (Looking at you, zombie genre.) Ridiculous, over-the-top premises that are so unbelievable as to be complete nonsense abound. Terrible dialogue, bad directing, unconvincing antagonists, slow or fast pacing… They’re all far too common in the genre. (This isn’t to say that all of these are specific to horror; they most certainly are not.)
But the horror movie that got me into horror movies, the one that changed my perspective on what movies could be: The Ring. It was so scary and so groundbreaking in the US. It started a trend of Japanese horror remakes in the West, and it got me interested in Japanese horror in general. Horror is so good when done right; I just wish it were done right more often.
