Just to give a head's up on this issue, the original post makes the error of saying that they're waiving a PO which a team cannot do. Rainey's contract has a TO, which they can wave. Most of the comments made here pertain to the PO rules.

Oops! Yes that is definitely a typo on my part. It is a TO that we are exercising. (I will fix this.)

For what it's worth, people keep saying that this shouldn't be allowed because real sports wait until the offseason. They also wait until the offseason to resign/extend, but other teams have already extended players & often do so early in the season. I do think more consistency is needed with extensions & options.
