One of the interesting parts about an NSFL player's schedule is all the traveling. The players spend a lot of time on the road and get to travel to many different cities. Errol Maddox grew up in Maryland and plays his home games in Baltimore, so it is especially interesting when he gets to travel away from the east coast and see other parts of the country. Heading to Orange County and San Jose and getting to see the west coast. Another interesting part of traveling comes when playing games in Yellowknife. NSFL players need to have valid passports so that they can travel between countries during the season. Other than playing in Tijuana in the DSFL, Maddox had not left the country before starting his NSFL career so it is always an exciting experience to get to spend a few days in Canada before playing a road game against the Wraiths. Whenever he travels to a new city, Maddox likes to take some time to see some of the local sights and try out some of the local restaurants to get a taste of the city's culture while he is there. The NSFL season can feel long with all the traveling, but it can also make for some very exciting opportunities to get to see and experience some new places.

When you play in Orange County in the NSFL, you’re going to have to deal with traveling. The Otters are the one of the league’s West Coast teams, along with San Jose. That means we have to always go East to some degree to get to our road games. While we’re lucky to only have a short trip to San Jose, We still have a LONG way to go to get to places like Baltimore, Philadelphia, New Orleans, etc. Luckily for us, being one of the league’s most dominant franchises has afforded the team some extra luxuries not every team gets. The Otters have our own private jet, whereas poor franchises like Colorado still have to fly commercial. The jet is so smooth too, you barely even realize you’re flying. A lot of flights TO the game have the guys going over game plans and getting ready. But on the way back, especially after a win? It’s a party. Guys can let loose, have a few drinks, and we play some games. While we play cards, I’m a big fan of playing dominoes. Slammin’ the bones can be the most fun, especially with some money on the line. We always have a blast, and it’s proven to be a hell of a team bonding experience. (215)

Traveling isn’t new to Harris. While he was growing up, his family would try to take some kind of vacation each year. Usually during summer break, depending on the distance they were traveling they would sometimes drive, fly, and rarely take a train. His primary activity to pass the time traveling is to just listen to music. It’s great for a lot of the time, but it can get old, and it isn’t a very social way to travel. The group he spends the most time with on the team are Lo Rax and Grayson Kuusela. The D-line room is a close group, but these three are particularly tight. The three of them will usually sit near one another so they can talk or play cards when they’re on the bus or plane. At their destination, they’ll usually get together the night before the game to go over their gameplan one last time. All this time spent together will hopefully build great chemistry between them, which should help them play to their potential, especially in these tough road games. On the trip home, if it’s a loss, Harris will usually just put his headphones on and keep to himself. If they win, it’s a lot lighter. Much more talking and joking on the trip home.

One thing that D’Pez Poopsie does to pass the time, while it is embarrassing, actually helps bring the team together. He loves to host Karaoke nights, either on the road, in the bus, in the hotel, hell even sometimes while they are on the plane. D’Pez Poopsie does this because he wants the team to excel together and work together, and even if it’s only Karaoke nights, it helps team bonding. One of Chris Orosz’s favorite groups to Karaoke to is none other than the Great Pink Floyd. The Tucks both love to sing along to Taylor Swift, and then you got the big boy in the middle Freezer Riposte ripping out some great old school Metallica. Joliet Christ tries to get out of it, but he has been known to belt a few different tunes here and there, and the team doesn’t have the guts to tell him he’s tone deaf. The guys have tried to get the offensive linemen involved in Karaoke nights, but they just stay on their devices and basically shut off whenever we are traveling, its crazy, some would think they are robots or something. The best singer of all though, would easily be Kazimir Oles, where he gets into his screamo phase it is game over for everyone.

Traveling on the road is not new for Axel Hornbacher. Being the son of Trevor Hornbacher, he would often tag along with his father when Trevor was the offensive coordinator for the Portland Pythons. Axel knew the rigors of the road and how fun and demanding it can be on an athlete. He learned how to pass the time throughout the years from former Python players and with technology becoming more available it was even easier to pass the time these days. Axel is an avid tv show watcher and usually passes the time with his headphones on and the latest hot new Netflix or HBO show. Sometimes he’ll dip into watching the latest movies, but he loves all types of Netflix shows from cooking documentaries to action and dark comedy shows. He’s even turned a few of his teammates onto new shows like Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. Another show he absolutely loves watching on repeat is The Office. He and Brian Mills (@PaytonM34) would spend hours watching episodes together on the bus and on the team plane. Sometimes they’d cause such a commotion laughing it up in the back of the plane that coaches would need to tell them to shut up in the middle of the night!

My mood certainly has an impact on how I choose to spend my travel time. I quite like reading and that requires me to be in a solitary mood as I cannot stand when people try talking to me when I am reading. I love reading anything, fantasy is probably my top choice but a good mystery or horror book gets me in the mood. A good autobiography or educational read gets my brain flowing, those and TED talks are absolutely amazing.

If I feel more sociable then I am down to play some cards with the boys, maybe padding the old bank account. I don't really care about poker itself but I like reading people and getting to share quips with my teammates. I do like a good game of cribbage or President that is less about winning money and more about earning bragging rights. We are also down to watch movies or binge watch television shows. The Replacements are a classic movie that we watch when we feel a little low, a good movie can totally change the outlook of a team. Coach does a good job of keeping the morale high and I think his choice of road movies play a large part.
