Apparently, I’m a heavy sleeper, Spike Crown reached out me at around 12:07am last night. I remember falling to sleep at 11:30. That was fun to wake up to. The home I knew for my entire professional career is no more. But what can you do but pick your head up and press onwards and upwards.
I don’t really have the words to describe it right now. I’m still reeling, I guess numb is it. I went for a run this morning to clear my head and I think I went too hard, but here I am.
So I want to start by calling people out, both good and bad. I’m told to always end on a high note, so starting with the bad. Bailey Cook, I’m calling you out. You have leverage by being a great wide receiver, I respect that, but using that leverage to go a different team, and a specific team, simply because your friend didn’t play for the same team is not rising to the occasion and challenging adversity. Luke Long is a good friend of mine, I look forward to playing against him as much as I would look forward to playing with him. This is Kevin Durant part 2, but without the ring because a wide receiver doesn’t do too much in terms of impacting the game, especially on the Wraiths. Moreover, if you expect to be hailed as a legend, you’re in for a world of hurt. You came in as the team finished the road trip, you got the easy road until the playoffs, and everyone knows it. You have to sacrifice to get where you are, I know I can, will, and did. Can you?
Ok, onto the good. To everyone on the Wraiths team, each and every one of you has been a pleasure to work with day in and day out. If I try to name every one of you has made the family at Yellowknife so great, it’s going to be a long 3 hours. But I want to address something; I bear no ill will towards any of you guys. I mean, it sucks, I felt like part of a family, and then I’m gone. But at the same time, the moment Cook asked to be traded I knew either the trade was going to materialize or it wasn’t. If the former happened, I was the odd one out, West is more productive, Garden makes the change a wash, so it was me. I don’t blame Mr. Crown for the trade, you don’t turn down the top WR in the league when he's banging at the door.
Thank you for the send off Orosz, Garden, Crown, and Maddox (also thanks for the wings recipe). Thank you fans of Yellowknife. I hope when I return there donning the Gold and Green you’re still as loud as boisterous as ever. Thank you Yellowknife Book Club. I still think that Picture of Dorian Grey, while a classic, is pretentious writing. Garden, thank you for taking me under your wing from the moment of the draft, you have no idea how much that meant to me. Orosz, thank you for lending me that game ball that you won week 1. I’m returning it to you in the hopes of getting my own in San Jose. Maddox, thank you for all those wings. To the other players that I didn’t name, thank you. You have all made me a better person because of it, and I cannot thank you enough. If you hold the Ultimus this year, which I hope in the event San Jose cannot win it, I am happy to see you achieve greatness.
To the fans of San Jose, you are not getting another Bailey Cook, you’re getting your first Darren Smallwood. I will bring 120% to every practice, game, drive and play. I can’t promise to replace what you lost but I can guarantee that no matter how bad the games go, no matter how grim it looks, I will be a proud member of the #SabercatPride. And when we become a dynasty, I will be just as proud to step up there.
San Jose, you are the next chapter is my career and I plan and hope to make Yellowknife the foreword.
