Okay, I've chatted about wanting to customize builds to give players more distinct feels, but here's something more formal. What if, for a PRICE, you could lower your max in one ability by a certain amount of TPE and put that amount in another?
As an example, let's look at Coverage Linebacker, since that's my jam.

So, in the interest of preventing exploit, let's make those untouchable for LB (and any other defensive player).
I would also draw attention to Endurance, which DOES have value to LB, but maybe...less value than many other stats. Also, EVERY player can get to 100 Endurance, and I feel that allowing players to reduce that and build other abilities is overpowering. Let's make that off-limits as well.
Since I've started talking about game-breaking, let's talk speed. Speed is VERY important, and I think we all agree that almost every defensive build is better by increasing speed almost as much as possible. So let's LIMIT how much it can be raised. I would suggest by 4 (ranks, not TPE). This will ensure that no archetype leap-frogs or even catches a higher-speed archetype. Closing the distance shouldn't be as significant, after all. So here's our our template looks. Black is fair game, yellow limited, and red untouchable.
